LIVING IN TROUBLED TIMES
The news cannot be ignored. Our nation is in deep peril from within its own soul. We seem to have become a dangerous, deranged, and damned citizenry.
Even within the simple activities of daily living… people are full of fear and hatred of and for “The Other” … defensive, guarded, suspicious of each other, we harbor our impotent rage and withhold our thoughts… afraid to say what we want and feel… unable to enter into civilized discussion and honest communication without jumping to pre-conclusions and shutting our ears to anything that sounds opposed to our own perspectives and beliefs. We just keep insisting our own self-righteous ‘rights’ to be of most importance, our personal ‘issues’ to hold precedence over those of others.
Even in some of our close friendships and within families we find a niggling doubt and uncertainty of where we agree or disagree. I must own this for myself, of course… and I cannot speak for others, except from what I hear and read. But it is clear that at the larger political and global level this is all true.
In the case of a broader political perspective the antagonistic bigotry is rampant. Peaceful, basically sane, hard-working folks rabidly defend their right to own and carry guns while railing against all reasonable argument for restricting their use. It is as if these people think we are still living in the wild west and must be prepared to have a shoot-out against our neighbors at any moment. Especially if our neighbor happens to be a person of another color than ourselves.
The racism that we have harbored for decades in denial has again surfaced vehemently. People are blind to the dangers they are promoting for the future of their children and for the entire world. Misogyny and Sexism march alongside Racism in open demonstrations against Humanism. It is pure insanity.
Others with more compassion for humanity and who see the reason behind laws and common-sense restrictions cannot comprehend where these seemingly nice “Christian” folks are coming from. What disease of conscience have they contracted? What can be eating at their minds and souls that causes them to become so utterly blind to reason?
Have demons been loosed among us? Some malicious virus infiltrated the food chain? Some virulent insect infested the water supply? Poisonous particles in the air-waves?
No. Unlikely any of these. Would that it was something so far-fetched and mysterious rather than the simple ugly truth that the poison is in human nature itself.
Even a superficial skimming of history reveals the long struggle we human animals have had just to get to a modicum of civilized discourse and peaceful co-existence. And it seems that fragile accord must undergo some periodically instigated breakdown from the pestilence of greed, hatred, jealousy and selfish indifference to others that simmers upon the fires in our hearts. Fear drives it all… a deep rooted fear of our own vulnerability…our dread of a loveless, lonely mortality.
Yes, it is true that we are entering a New Age in the long history of the planet we live upon. And we are being faced with the poisons and destructive patterns we ourselves have unleashed with our weapons and machines over the centuries.
Our petty jealousies and foolish pride have served to set us somehow above nature as if we were the Creators of our lives and of the world in which we live… as if we had the power and right to use it up for our own pleasure without consideration for any others… including the animals and plants and very soil upon which we walk.
We Humans Are God’s Big Mistake. And we need to get busy correcting ourselves… But this need not spell doom and gloom as long as we strive to cleanse our spirits and souls of hatred and denial and join each other in the urgent process of replenishing what we have spoiled.
And I believe this calls first for opening up our ears and minds. For me it means to take the risk to speak up honestly, despite my fear of being rejected, derided or denounced by those I count as friends.
So I have begun in a ‘safe’ way to stick my neck out. On Facebook and in emails I have begun posting articles and opinions about the political and social issues of urgent importance that we currently face as a nation. I feel compelled to add my small voice to the discourse that must be started in order to bring sanity back into our lives. I need to believe that I can help in some small way.
But even as I have been an advocate of various ‘dicey’ philosophies throughout my life… (astrology, mystical spirituality, and sexual liberation for example…) I have never felt as vulnerable to attack and criticism as I do in simply stating my political and social views openly. Yet as I do so I find a new sense of peace beginning to blossom within me, and that helps build up courage to listen to others’ reactions and continue the discourse.
I ask for and welcome your comments here as well. Thank you for reading.
