FALL EQUINOX
We have arrived at the turning point when Light and Dark shift once again. At this moment day-light and night-dark hang in balance for a few days. Then the scales shift and darkness begins to overcome light. Many dread this moment for it portends the coming of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, but south of the Equator, folks anticipate the coming of summer.
Yet at his moment the whole world stands in balance between light and dark. The “Scales of Libra” signify justice and balance, the building of equal relationships, and appreciation for “the Other”, These are the themes of Cosmic Wisdom in the Autumn. (see my article on Libra under the Mystical Moments page above)
It is a time to pray that our World Leaders might take the opportunity to bring greater equilibrium to an unequal “balance of power” that is currently so dangerously out of kilter in our homelands and between nations.
Here in the North, “Fall” is, as its name suggests, a time of falling__ leaves, apples, temperatures. And sometimes our spirits sag also as we watch gardens wither and die away, evenings grow cool and dark earlier, and birds fly away to the South. We find a need to let go of some things we have enjoyed or relied upon through the summer. Kids go away to college, friendships drift apart as work demands more time, some friends leave, like the birds, to spend the next few months in warmer climates, and we put away summer sandals and shorts in exchange for winter boots and sweaters.
Yet Fall is a time of celebration. It is the time of Harvest, and of enjoying the bounty of summer’s gifts. This year, here in Minnesota, we have been blessed with an unusually lovely summer and so far autumn is promising to be beautiful as well. It is my favorite season because I enjoy cooler days. My artist spirit soars at the brilliant blue skies against which turning leaves radiate fantastic colors.
I only complain that the season of Fall does not last long enough. I plan to enjoy it while it is here and leave my complaining for the winter months! Happy Autumn everyone!
