ON FAIRY GARDENS AND BEING A CHILD AT HEART
I guess I believe in fairies. Or at least, I must admit I am still a little girl at heart.
I cannot say I have actually seen a fairy, but then again… how would one know if some of the dust motes or wee bugs around the world aren’t actually fairies, or at least signals of their presence nearby? I confess I do like to “believe” in magic.
I have collected exquisite fairy figures and droll fairytale creatures for much of my adult life. They are arranged in whimsical settings among a clutter of decorative collectibles around my home… which is a veritable “boutique” of enchanting fashion dolls, cuddly teddy bears, amusing stuffed animals, fanciful wall art, charming figurines and fascinating books.
This is a healing, peaceful setting. The small creatures and characters imbue my home a sense of quiet contentedness… a feeling of safety and protection from the ravages of the outside world… there is a cheerful serendipity and happy-go-lucky charm that calms my nerves, soothes my soul and gives me courage and hope to face more serious matters.
This haven is my retreat from real life. It is also where I dream up ideas for my art and writing.
Seems like a lot to expect from a bunch of nic-nacs and froufrou’s ! But I DO believe in their power to enrich my life.
Now, with summer arriving at last, I have begun to set up some fairy-gardens and fairy villages outside among the flowers on my deck and in my yard. The Cat Tribe that lives in the carport and under the house will probably enjoy them too!
More pictures of the fantasy vignettes around my home inside and out will be in a new posting on the “All About Me” page of my blog soon, so pleases stay tuned. Also, watch for a new short story about my Outdoor Cat Tribe
